What is SEL?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is a way that children learn to manage their school and home life, including: recognizing and managing emotions; being able to set personal goals; establishing positive relationships; and making responsible decisions. Education programs across the United States, including those in California, are focusing on these skills in order to help students maintain better mental and emotional health.
Why Horses?
Horses are unique in that they are very honest, do not judge individuals, and have no agenda. Trust with horses must be earned, and students learn to be genuine with the horses as well as with themselves. Students will learn lessons with the horses that they can transfer to their school and personal lives.
What Will the Students Learn?
Students will focus on different aspects of Socio-Emotional Learning, including:
- Self-Management
- Social Awareness
- Relationship Skills
- Self-Awareness
- Responsible Decision-Making
Each week students will work on these skills through engaging closely with the horses on the ground, learning horse management skills including: grooming, horse-to-human communication, sensory training and exercising. Additional assignments may include: journaling, family interviews and personal goal planning.
Is This Therapy?
No, these are better termed as life skills that will help students better balance their personal relationships and their home and school life. If you are looking for equine therapy or an equine-assisted coaching program, we suggest contacting Equine Assisted Coaching OC.
Is This Camp for Adults?
No, this camp is tailored for children 12-16 years old. We have a Summer Academy for people ages 16+, including adults. Click here for more information.
Does My Child Have to Attend All Four Weeks?
It is highly recommended that your child attend all four weeks as the students will continue to build on their skills throughout the camp, so those who attend all four weeks will get the full benefit of the camp. If you are not able to attend all four weeks, we can accommodate you.
Requirements:
1. Children must be calm around the horses, able to take direction, have a good sense of humor, and have a willingness and desire to learn about horses and horse care. Children enrolled in the clinic should genuinely enjoy working around horses.
2. Children will NOT ride the horses, but they will be responsible for all care of horses on the ground. For that reason, all children enrolled must wear appropriate clothing, including: jeans, breeches or other long pants, boots/closed-toe shoes and gloves. Shirts should fit well without being too tight or too loose. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are recommended. Water will be provided but students should bring their own snack.
